Cania Gorge Campsite

Sat 5 September… It rained in the night which worked out well for us as we had to drive over 20K’s of dirt road to get to where we are. The rain kept the dust down to a minimum. We have left the coast and travelled inland, a distance of 250K’s altogether, to Cania Gorge National Park. Up in ‘t hills! We stopped first at the town of Gin Gin where they claim to make the best meat pies in Oz ( where have we heard that before?!!) With a name like Gin Gin they should be claiming something else, though they say it is the friendliest town in Queensland, perhaps they are. We only stopped to check out the state of the road over the Burnett Range at the tourist info office. Onwards and upwards to the town of Mount Perry where we might have stopped for a while if we had had more time. It looked to be a typical outback town and it was their annual camel racing day. It sounded as though it would be a lot of fun. We bet there was a libation being taken. A little later a short diversion took us to the Boolboonda Tunnel, at 192m, the longest unsupported manmade tunnel in the southern hemisphere. A feat of engineering , no one else there, and anything bigger than us wouldn’t have got through! We think there were lots of bats roosting in it, they were flying about and it did pong! Photos to follow!
Over the mountain we arrived in Monto, which we thought looked a bit familiar, then we spotted a coffee shop which we realised we had called in when we were on our way south to Tamworth and Sydney. We’d approached Monto from a different direction. Here at Cania Gorge Tourist Retreat it is fairly busy. The camp is at the entrance to the gorge and first impressions are very good. It looks like there are several easy to moderate walks thoughout the gorge and national park and it appears to be teaming with wildlife. We have already had a visit from a whip tailed wallaby around the van.
