Walking in Cania Gorge

Sun 6 September… Once again we are totally incommunicado with the outside world, we have no mobile coverage, and a new excuse why the WiFi doesn’t work-----it was because of the big fire. God knows when that was as there is no sign of a fire but they are still advertising wireless internet.
We had planned to do several of the walking trails in the gorge today but we overslept and didn’t get out until late and in the heat of the day. The first trail was classed as moderate, they lied. It took us up the side of the gorge and along a goat track to a place called the two storey cave which is an important bat cave, where we could only see where they had been and there was no sign of Robin! Not overly exciting, just a 1 and a half K scramble. Back at the picnic area where we had started from we set off on another hike to yet another cave, Dragon Cave, which was more like a cave but no dragons. The sign said it was up a moderately steep track well it’s either steep or it isn’t, it was steep! Moderate didn’t come into it. The rock formations were quite spectacular but quite difficult to photograph because of all the trees. We climbed another 500m to the gorge lookout and we think we may have some good photos. We could see all along Cania Gorge but once again there many trees. By now, the Navigator was puffing like an old dray horse so we scrambled down back to the picnic area then hiked back to camp, saying we would save a couple of walks for tomorrow. The trails took us 3 hours to scramble along and now the Navigator doesn’t think she can do any more tomorrow because of her blister. Fortunately Peter knows where the blister plasters are!
