Hervy Bay Seafood Festival
Sun 16 August… Today we have given Hervy Bay our best attention. It was another glorious day as we set off driving to visit the harbour where there was a seafood festival somewhere abouts. Before the harbour we come across yet another longest jetty in Australia, that makes the fourth from memory. Anyway it used to be 1 kilometre long but someone chopped the end off and now it’s only about 868m or something. We walked the length of it though we thought that the boys thought there wasn’t much point! It was worth the effort for the views alone it really is a lovely bay. The trouble is the other half of Victoria that aren’t up north are here, it’s very busy. Hervy Bay is another place that didn’t get populated until about 30 years ago, 6 years ago the population was 30,000 and growing. It’s a great place for whale watching as the migrating humpback whales and their calves stop here in the bay to rest and to put on blubber before heading south to the colder waters of the Antarctic. There are several whale spotting boat trips out of the harbour, but we have seen them from dry land. Just as spectacular. We had a mooch around the marina which was full of posh shiny yachts Tobi couldn’t make his mind up which one to buy with his remaining $30. We then drove to the other end of the bay to Point Vernon and Gatakers Bay for lunch. It was much quieter there and didn’t look very good for swimming because of the rocky foreshore, so we had a swimfree day. Shopped on the way home, then realised we never got to the Seafood Festival!
