Crikey!!

Sat 22 August… Crikey!! Australia Zoo home of the famous crocodile hunter Steve Irwin is a ripper, we have just had a great day out there. We were up early to catch the courtesy bus to the zoo then got a 30 min non stop commentary from the driver on what we were going to see. At the zoo we were met by a member of staff with a couple of parakeets on her arm and from then on it was a day full of interactive stuff between animals and staff. At 11 o’clock we all piled into the Crocoseum to watch a fabulous display of snakes, birds and crocodiles. The various snakes were paraded round by their handlers, one of which swam with his snake in the arena pool. Then there was a display of free flying parrots, cockatoos and a very special entrance of a Jabiru, which seemed to fly in on command. It was all very impressive with multicoloured birds zooming about in the arena. Graham, the grumpy croc then made his appearance and his handler went through a similar performance that we have seen Steve Irwin do on T V a few years ago. We saw photos of the damage Graham did to another handler when it attacked him and Irwin some time ago, he survived but he must have some very nasty scars. After the show we walked around collecting blisters looking at everything on show. We saw the otters being fed, a bloke swimming with a tiger, and lizards and goannas just roaming free. The rainforest bird enclosure was spectacular with so many colourful species of birds all indigenous to Australia. The kangaroos, wombats and of course the koalas were a big hit as you can gat really close to feed and pet them. We saw more crocs, elephants, all sorts of deadly snakes and a display of deadly spiders which were encased in blocks of clear resin…….the best place for them!! The temperature reached over 30 degrees today and by the time the bus delivered us back to Caloundra we were shattered and ready for an after zoo V B.
