Thurs 13 August… All we had to do this morning was pack up and drive the half hour trip to Rocky for a quick shop for essentials and diesel before setting off south. Somehow we managed to stand in line behind every idiot in Rockhampton. First it was the supermarket checkout, then some dipstick in the servo (wearing his gloves!) who took 10 mins to put $50 worth of diesel in his 4X4, after standing behind someone faffing about in the bottlo!! It was so frustrating the whole job put us back by nearly an hour, which is a lot when you have a 4 hour journey ahead. Eventually we got going on a nice drive through the countryside following the Burnett range of hills to our right. We stopped at Miriam Vale for lunch and by then the temperature was warming nicely.
We are staying at an environmentally friendly campsite which generally means you can’t dump your chemical toilet and they don’t have much water, which is ironic as it is called Agnes Waters. It’s very close to the oddly named “Town of 1770” and not unlike some of the bush camps we have stayed on in the past. It’s our type of camp, but Vanessa and Tobi are not too sure, Tobi is mortified that you only get a timed 4 minutes in the shower, no street lights and we don’t have a concrete slab to step onto, just grass. It’s all good stuff, kookaburras making a hell of a racket and we may get a visit from the kangaroos at dusk.
