Up to date at last!
We have practically seen everything on Philip Island, just one more sight to see and then we plan to visit Wisons Promontory, which is a National Park and the most southern point of the OZ mainland. Before leaving Philip Island we just have to see Nobbies Blow Hole. How could we resist! The Nobbies turn out to be impressive lumps of granite being pounded by surf. There are lots of seals about or so they say, we didn't see any. There were large colonies of protected seabirds, except for the Blackbacks, who pinch the chicks of the silver headed gulls. We saw it happen, nature is very cruel. The blow hole is exactly that. A cave..... and as waves crash inside the back pressure blows the spray out again with a loud booming noise. Great fun to watch. Unfortunately the interactive information centre at Nobbies Point, situated in a lavish glass and chrome building, didn't open until 11 so we couldn't pick up any more facts to stun and amaze you.Off the Island we head for Wilsons Prom, stopping at Fishcreek for lunch. It's only then, reading the paper that we realise there is a big fire raging there and they have closed the whole of the peninsula (National Park) Plan B is to go to Toora, where we were going anyway which is across the water from Wilsons Prom. From here we can see huge plumes of smoke billowing up across the sky we are about 10 to 15K away as the crow flies. Apparently the fire service cannot get at the fire because of the terrain, water from planes has not done any good so they are concentrating on excavating huge fire breaks. There is also a fire ahead of us so we may be stuck here for a day.
