Black Saturday

At 8 30, the temperature was already 30 degrees when we set off for Philip Island. Little did we know what was about to transpire later that day.
Philip Island is actually only 90 mins away from Melbourne but not from where we are. After a good study of the map we reckon we can do a shop stop and then go across country, sort of south west to Philip Island. Our shopstop is at Drouin, on the Prince's Highway, and we heard the next day hit had been caught in the bush fires. As we travel, the temperature continues to rise, so windows shut and aircon on until we reach Philip Island 2 hours later. It is forecast to be the hottest day ever in Victoria. All peter can think about is parking up and throwing himself in the sea, and within 15 mins of arriving ,he does. All I wanted to do was sit indoors in the aircon. It must have been about about 45 degrees, but then the wind got up as well, practically gale force, whipping up dust and leaves and generally being very unpleasant. There was a pool which helped with the cooling down as well. It did cool down a bit and Peter got out George the Gorilla again. We had hoped to get on the internet but couldn't, as is usual on sites that boast they have it! It was only the next day that the enourmity of the bush fires hit us. It is a National disaster. Reading the papers ,it's the speed at which it travelled in the high wind that was truly terrifying, plus the radiant heat could kill you at 140M.
