Cane Toad Day

 31/03/2012
Would you believe today is Queensland’s ‘kill a cane toad  day’…….honest. Well maybe that’s a slight exaggeration . What we are all supposed to do is go out this evening in the dark, catch and bag as many cane toads as you can, then take them to a designated place tomorrow to be counted and weighed. Weigh in is between 9 and 12 noon, then, once recorded they euthanize the evil little buggers! I prefer my toadometer, it’s quick and you don’t need plastic bags and gloves.
Spent a very pleasant afternoon at the boat club, sitting on the deck with a few cold beers under an overworked cooling fan as the day time temperatures have soared again recently. For dinner we set about our beef steak winnings from Thursday evening. It was very good which is just as well as there is quite a lot of it.

Yesterday was tackle a toad day, today it is National put a new battery in your smoke alarm day      you couldn’t make it up! After a trip to the boat club we decided not to call a Matildas as Allen and Lorraine were in Cairns, Glyn seems to be on his best behaviour and isn’t playing out on Sunday evenings. He must be taking his work very seriously……tho both his and Alanas companies do drug and alcohol testing.  So, we settled down thinking we were billy no mates again when Paul turned up, so we took the eski over to the beach and had a few cold ones until the sun went down.

Queenslands top a toad day was a great success (unless you were a toad)  4,500 toads weighing a total of 428Kg went to the great cane field in the sky. The biggest one was 18.5cm, a whopper.
Our emergency exit lights have packed up and required an electrician. Our usual one is not too clever, didn’t know how to fix them so now we are charged with the task of phoning around until we can find a sparky who can. The caretakers life is never dull!
