The Wet

 12/03/2012
Don’t know anything about our guests as we haven’t had time to chat to them, just that one of the ladies is over from England on holiday. Managed a bit of gardening between showers. The forecast is for a wet week, but they are not very good at forecasting, so we shall see.

The forecast today is for rain until Thursday and then it’s going to get wet. The tropical monsoon trough is heading our way and will arrive at the end of the week. It has rained heavily all day today, flooding the garden and I have had to pump out the pool to a level where it doesn’t overflow. This could become a regular occurrence over the next week.
Obviously there’s not much we can do outside so we treated ourselves to some afternoon DVD watching. Today’s delight was the iconic ( so it said on the sleeve) Australian film, ‘The Man from Snowy River’  come on, you must have seen it! Kirk Douglas as a handsome young chap? Bugger, if it’s not in 2 parts, can’t wait for part ll!
Our library is likely to take a bashing though we are well stocked up and Stumpys new kindle should arrive from the U K any day now. She read the print off the first one. At least we have our creature comforts living here in the unit. It wouldn’t be much fun in a caravan park at the moment, in this wet.

Managed to resist the temptation to watch The Man from Snowy River part ll……. saving it for a rainy day!
Our good friend Glyn has finally landed a job and starts Monday at Barron Gorge power station. We said he will have plenty of water to play with whilst he is generating electricity, The Barron river is full!

Another shovathon day as I put the mileage in pushing Stumpy around the shopping mall in the free wheelchair. We needed to extend our Medicare cover for the next 12 months which entailed a visit to their office. That sorted and some lunch in the mall, we emerged to discover that it hadn’t rained for at least 3 hours! Thursdays are grass cutting days, but I had written it off this morning as we were supposed to have heavy rain all day. Back to Clifton and the wet stayed away long enough to get the job done, with the only distraction of cane toad slaughtering. The horrible things are everywhere and the Toadometer comes into it’s own. These things are highly poisonous and a smack with the Toadometer has to be well judged. A smack too heavy and I got covered in a nasty spray of toad fluid. That means a quick wash down from the hose pipe or if really bad a shower fully clothed.
Our showers have been well used today, firstly by me then by our friends the Millers. With more water around than enough they have somehow managed to have a burst pipe at their house and all four of them came round to use our showers this evening. They might just as well have stood in the garden with a loofah as the rain turned torrential…….that will make the grass grow!

Friday is usually Centrals rugby club for a few beers and to meet up with friends and then supper. This week our friend Paul invited us up to his place for a change. It does get very noisy at the club as Friday night is Karaoke night! When that starts it’s our cue to take our beers outside on the covered veranda, which unfortunately is the smoking area,…….. can’t win!
We had a very pleasant evening at Pauls, sat out on the deck outside his very own personal pub. As it’s St Patricks day tomorrow and Paul is of Irish descent I bought him a 6 pack of Guinness which came with a free pint Guinness glass. He was not too bothered about the Guinness being a lager lout, but was really chuffed with the glass. We didn’t have the heart to tell him it was a freebie! Sitting on the deck we sometimes struggled to hear one another, the rain on the tin roof became torrential, again we are threatened with extreme weather over the next week. Must go to Bunnings and buy some timber, we may need to build an ark!

Our guests , whom we have hardly seen left early this morning to catch their flights back to Canberra. That leaves us Billynomates again. Probably just as well as  we are taking precautions ahead of the threatened weather. It only means moving pool furniture into a secure place so it doesn’t blow about and cause havoc, and generally making things secure.
We rang for the Yorkeys Knob courtesy bus and went to the boat club for a schooner or four with my brother Steve. As we sat on the deck it was obvious the weather was on the change. It’s on it’s way slowly, the wind increasing with storms. Our two beautiful islands off the coast here at Clifton ( Double Island and Scout Hat Island)seem to disappear in the storm, then reappear in glorious sunshine only to vanish again in no time at all. The daft thing about it all is is that the temperature remains the same, give a degree or two.
We will try and keep you upsides with our doings, perhaps we could get some feedback ? Nothing from Nobble for 3 weeks now.
