Queen Mary and pottering about

19/02/2012                                                                                                                                             Great excitement, the Queen Mary 2 visited Cairns, arriving at 8 o’clock this morning. She is the biggest cruise liner in the world apparently and too big to dock in Cairns marina, so she is anchored off Yorkeys Knob, just one kilometre off shore from us out in the bay. People have been arriving all day long to look and take photos from just in front of our units while we have a spectacular view from the first floor balcony. The weather has been indifferent all day, sometimes the sun shone beautifully on the Queen Mary and sometimes she disappeared behind squalls of rain and at 6 o’clock when she was leaving we couldn’t see her at all because of a rain storm. Later as it got dark the weather cleared and we watched her sail away with all her lights on, a huge floating hotel. Her next stop is Darwin on her circumnavigation of Australia.
The forecast for today was good, mostly dry, so I set about spraying the car park with weed killer, weeds showing through the block paving. Weed killer not to be used when rain is likely within the next 24 hours, what a joke, it’s the wet season. Anyway I did it and guess what, it turned from cloudless blue skies to a thunder storm in a matter of 4 hours. We invited Glyn over for a BBQ supper but had to wait for the rain to stop before we could get at the BBQ. In the meantime we sorted a slab of Tooheys, plus some. Finished up with a steak sandwich just before bedtime!

Gardening day, well weeding mostly apart from moving a few plants that looked as if they needed separating. Haven’t got much of an idea when it comes to tropical plants, but I suppose the same rules apply in the tropics as anywhere else……..they’ve got 2 chances!
Managed to get old Leg iron into the pool this arvo. I expected her leg to sink like a stone but it didn’t, it floats about like a pink buoy in a flotation bag.  Spoke to Phil and Jules on skype, they are not happy. They are having dreadful weather down in N S W which destroys the myth that Australians put around  about their glorious climate. It’s the worst summer in south and west Queensland and most of N S W that anyone can remember. Not too bad here HA! Phil and Jules have tasked us with finding their passports which are some where in the unit. They are so fed up they are thinking of jetting off somewhere warm, won’t be the U K though!

21/02/2012A pretty boring day as it rained most of it. I did manage some gardening, shame we won’t be here to see the results in a couple of years time. Some of the planting should look pretty good eventually (if it grows) and the swimming pool will be very secluded surrounded by tropical plants.
The leg iron has been on the shiny thing to see if we can claim from our insurance for altered flights, broken legs and general disruption of our lives. Naturally it appears we have no claim but why should we be surprised, that’s what insurance companies do best…..wriggle and squirm until they find a clause whereby the computer says NO!
