Leaving Broome under a cloud!

 07/06/2011
A slightly different sort of a day today as we have had to move to a different location. We are about  1K down the road from Tarangau Caravan Park.  Now in Palm Grove Caravan Park on Drainage Avenue, very close to Broome North Circular, and under the flight path unusually there isn’t a railway close by! The good news is, we are 59 paces away from the Divers Tavern where tonight the are holding the “ Miss Cable Beach competition 2011”  I was dragged away after a couple of pints, kicking and screaming.
This morning we had a wander around Broome town street  market, selling the usual market fare, but again we were very impressed by the standard of the street entertainers, mostly musicians here, all very good. I just love the sounds from the didgeridoo and it’s made better when it is accompanied by acoustic guitar.

Battery day we have called today. I have had hearing aid batteries on order at the chemist for over a week and they are not going to arrive because the supplier is out of stock. Tell them to get some more we thought, but it’s not as simple as that, this is outback Australia. Our deep cycle battery that runs the fridge and the lights, when we are free camping with no power supply, has packed up. Off we went to the Auto electricians,    $414 later we have a new battery and are now up and  running. As a joke I said “I don’t suppose you sell hearing aid batteries”,    “We do batteries Mate, what size?” I showed him, “ No worries, give me 2 days”  Chemist can’t get them , so go to the garage!!
Didn’t make the beach today, sampled the camp swimming pool instead.

August seems to be Broomes busiest month, mainly because of the temperatures, it’s a steady 30/ 32C each day and cools round to around 14/15 each night. Some of the soft southern Aussie still have to have their aircon going at night, as it’s too hot for them, which, in a way destroys the assumption that the weather in all of Australia is perfect all the year round.
It’s also race week here in Broome, Ladies day today and the Broome Cup run next Saturday, a huge event for Broome, attracting horse racing folk from all over the country.   (We would have gone, ‘cept hers’ got nothing to wear!)
We also copped  Australia’s census day and have stood up to be counted ………..again!! We just filled one out in the U K before we left, not that we cold give them much information, being persons of no fixed abode.
Turned another shade today  on the beach.

We are leaving Broome for a week, after an altercation with the manager of Tarangua Caravan Park where we were due to stay. We were here last week and knew that we were returning to an “overflow” area, Broome being full to capacity. We were allocated a spot next to the barbeque, workshop and fish cleaning area, the furthest place from the toilets and showers. The small bit of grass area was coned off, so we moved the cones a couple of feet, and set up, only to be told later by  the manager to put the cones back and move over a bit. I refused and he said “If we didn’t move we could go and get our money and Piss Off”  and so we did. A couple of frantic phone calls gave us accommodation for 1 night, 5K’s out of Broome and then we decided to return to the splendid park at Port Smith, where we had felt most welcome 2 weeks ago.
It will take a lot of sorting tomorrow as we need supplies for a week and our tiny fridge will need some organising.
