Mon 31 August… It was a bit of a wrench leaving Rainbow Beach, we have had some good times there, but we are here to travel and see different places. Having said that, we are covering ground that we have already done, but really we haven’t got a choice. To travel north we have to follow this route before we can turn inland. Anyway we wanted to look at Maryborough, a really laid back, old fashioned town. The last time we were here it was a Sunday and the only place open was the public convenience. Today is Monday and Maryborough is open but it’s a job to tell the difference. It was obviously a very wealthy town 150 years ago as we could see by the very distinctive buildings, which were owned by rich landowners who grew sugarcane. It was also an important port, where cheap labour from the South Sea Islands was brought into work in the agricultural business, They were much better suited to work in the tropical environment than the Europeans. We found it quite fascinating and then to cap it all we came across a statue of Mary Poppins! The author ( P L Travers)was born here-------- how thrilling is that.
On to Childers where the Peanut van is. We had stopped here before too, where you can get almost any flavour of peanut you can think of. Vanessa bought some hot chilli flavoured ones for Hubby John the last time,-----but she ate them!! This time we have Honey and Ginger and some Chilli and Lime flavours. We have arrived at Woodgate, yet another beachside van park, it’s way off the beaten track and yet quite full. The beach is 16 K’s long but does not appear to have any surf. It’s safer bathing and looks like a popular fishing beach. Two nights here should be enough. It describes itself as tranquil!
