Mamu Rainforest Canopy Walk

Thursday 17 September… There is such a lot to see and do in this area just south of Cairns so we are staying an extra day to fit some of it in. We went to Mamu in the Wooroonooran National Park ( try saying that after half a dozen V B’s!) to look at another rainforest, but this time from a walkway above the canopy. In 2006 a cyclone ripped through the forest cutting swathes as it went, so it was decided to build a steel walkway where the cyclone had flattened the forest. So it’s fairly new. There is an interesting cantilever section that bounced and swayed about fairish and because it is unsupported it is not for the faint hearted, it’s a case of one handed camera work as the other one hangs onto the rail. However it is built to support the weight of an adult African elephant, though why he would want to go up there beats me! The total walk is 3 k’s with a 37m tower to climb up, with spectacular views over the forest and down the Johnston River Gorge. Peter said it was alright if you like trees! There was a huge diversity but we didn’t really know what we were looking at. Close to Mamu there are several other walks to waterfalls through the rain forest but we gave them a miss as we had walked enough and we are in danger of O D-ing on rainforests! The journey out and back was through more banana plantations than you could ever imagine. They could probably supply the whole world with bananas from here. They also have coffee and tea plantations and we stopped at a roadside stall, complete with honesty box, to buy some tea, and then a similar stall that sold paw paws and bananas Back at Flying Fish Point there is no sign of our “camp” commandant but how are we to know?
