Sat 26 September… The village of Daintree and the Daintree River are not far up the road so we plan to have a day around there. We drove by the hotel we stayed in 6 years ago and remembered it well, but still can’t recall the journey to it. Daintree Village is tiny, 4 or 5 shops with an Info centre ( one of the shops is a general store cum cafĂ© cum bar and is exactly as we remembered it.) We had a dreadful cup of coffee there, then booked ourselves on a river cruise with Crocodile Express for some croc bothering and wild life spotting. It’s good value as the tickets at $20 are for 3 days unlimited trips from 2 different start points on the river, each trip for about an hour. We hadn’t been going many minutes when we came across a medium sized salty ( about 3 metres) sunning himself on the sandbank. We took photos but we were just a bit too far away. Then we saw a couple of kingfishers, a snake necked darter ( similar to a cormorant) and that was it. It was a nice trip down the river and we now know a lot more about mangroves and bloody rainforests!! Later we drove down to the river ferry crossing where at the kiosk we were amazed to see a sunbird building a nest suspended from a piece of wire. The female builds the nest whilst the male supervises! On the Croc Express we saw even less wild life than the previous trip, but plenty of mangroves! A couple snakes were pointed out to us, they were lying along branches and you need a degree in eyesight to see them. They were harmless tree snakes apparently.
The dust haze is slowly beginning to settle, a couple more days and it should be back to the normal crystal clear visibility, Hopefully.
