Sat 8 August… After last nights’ entertainment which went on late, and we later adjourned to Vanessa’s balcony with a bottle of collapso, we were a little sluggish first thing this morning. There is no better way to start the day than with a breakfast cooked and served by someone else, then flop onto a sun lounger to contemplate the coming day. First we swapped the dreaded wet suits for shorties, which are much easier to get into then, as the tide is just right, into the water for snorkelling. The boys are now really good at it and are spotting and recognising different species, though Tobis’ great white shark had to be questioned! We did see a lot of things. After staggering back from another full lunch, a short lie down, then Grandad, Robbie and Tobi go off to the jetty for a swim, where the water is deeper as the tide is now out. Whilst they were in the water, the boys kept saying “we’re not supposed to swim here Grandad” as they had read a sign that said so. Peter hadn’t seen the sign and went up onto the jetty to have a look, and there it was, along with 4 Black tipped reef sharks cruising around the boats tied up at the jetty. They are of course harmless, it says so in the book, but the fish they were eating obviously hadn’t read it.
Hoot of the day was a big, fat, loud, gum chewing American bloke trying to get into a wet suit for snorkelling. We are size 6 or 7 and he must have been 18 or more. He tried the mask on over his glasses, all the time chewing gum with an open mouth. We wondered how he managed when he was snorkelling. All good fun. Wonder what the entertainment will be tonight, somehow doubt it will be the cricket.
