Heron Island arrival

Wed 5th August….. At last we have arrived on Heron Island, It is just as beautiful as ever. We have left the vans in a secure compound at Gladstone Port and caught the catamaran to Heron. It was a fairly choppy journey which made the Navigator throw up, having refused a sea sickness pill! The crossing takes 2 hours arriving at 2 o’clock - along time to be chucking up!. Those of us that weren’t sick got a complimentary glass of champagne and had to share the Navigator’s.
The weather is nearly perfect with a bit of breeze and is set fair for a week or more. On arrival our bags are taken to our cabins while we have a short briefing from one of the staff. After lunch we went reef walking as the tide was out, we discovered all sorts of stuff in the coral, we found out that giant clams which when they are just above the surface will squirt water at you when you touch them, they close up very quickly and give you a shot of water. We found a black and white spotted eel (Honeycomb Moray) in the coral and lots of sea cucumbers. Later we went to the dive shop to book a dive and hire some wet suits. We had forgotten how difficult it was to get into a different suit, a lot of huffing and puffing and swearing we managed to get them on without the aid of a warm greasy spoon. We are in the pool at 7.45am tomorrow for a short refresher and reckon we will have to be up at 4am to get into wetsuits on time! Just before dinner we were sat on the sunset deck watching whales just beyond the reef and sharks just below us, all this and a beer as the sun went down. We wondered what the poor people were doing!
