Spot the Cassowary!

Mon 29 June… It’s sort of a panic tanning day today as we start to head south tomorrow. The weather won’t change overnight but it will gradually get cooler each day as we head towards Sydney.
We spend the morning giving the van it’s 3 monthly wash as it was getting difficult to see through the windows ------ it’s bound to rain now! After the big scrub we set off to Wongaling Beach which is between the 2 Mission Beaches in Cassowary Country. It didn’t suit us, there were people on the beach, there must have been at least half a dozen! So, in the end we settled on South Mission Beach for a couple of hours, as most of the day had gone. The sea is still quite warm so we had a swim despite all things that are said to try and sting and bite you. I may be our last chance for a while. On the drive back to Tully Heads we get flashed by a couple of cars going the other way, which usually means speed trap so we slowed down and are amazed to see a male cassowary with his chick by the side of the road. We managed to get a couple of photos before they scuttled off back into the bush. It took only seconds, but we still managed to collect a few vehicles up our exhaust. Anyway we can tick that one off as Peter had been a bit sceptical as to whether there were any of these fine looking birds about despite all the signs. Photos to follow!
