Fri 10 July… It was rather chilly last night and we had a job to get the wine up to room temperature! It’s a tough life on the road.
We have been in touch with an Aussie mate, who spent some time in Newbold a few years ago. Hamish lives in Tamworth which is on our route to Sydney so we are going to meet up over the weekend. It’s quite a long journey to Tamworth, so we get a fairly early start on a blustery but sunny morning. The landscape was really nice as we are zig-zagging across the Great Dividing Range yet again, very hilly, but a change from the vast prairies and deserts that is much of the Australian north. We have crossed the border into New South Wales which becomes obvious by the condition of the roads. We have driven through every state in Oz now except Tasmania, and without doubt the worst roads are in Queensland. It just doesn’t seem a priority. As we move south, the part of N S W we are in takes on a distinctly Celtic feel. The place names are mostly spelt the same as in the U K but they are not in the right order! Dundee with the River Severn running through it, is just down the road from Stonehenge, which isn’t too far from Llangothlin (their spelling) We climb to the top of Ben Lomond (1040m) and down a side road is Glencoe. Further on we drive through Guyra, which is nothing to do with Celts, but we notice it has a Lamb and Potato festival every January. It also boasts the highest caravan park in Australia. We will spare you any more of this mind blowing information!!
