Mackay

Thurs 2 July… Before we left Bowen we thought we had better go and have a look at it, at the town and the campsite we couldn’t get into, just to see what we have missed. It wasn’t a lot. The sea front is in the process of being ripped up so we couldn’t get near it and the campsite we wanted is just behind the roadwork’s, a bit of a shambles really. We found our way to a lookout point that looks out towards the Whit Sunday Islands one way and over the town of Bowen the other. It’s a beautifully clear, warm sunny morning, and the sea is flat calm. The few islands we can see look really nice and we will try to visit some of them on the return trip. We are on our way as far as the big town of Mackay, another 200K’s, as we travel Peter thought we had left sugar cane country behind, but he was wrong! If fact there seems to be nothing but cane as far as we can see. Mackay’s main industry is sugar and of course further down the coast is Bundaberg which is famous for it’s Demerara rum, so they would need a bit of sugar wouldn’t they?! We found our site for the next 2 nights by accident, we drove past it whilst heading for the town marina where we had decided to have lunch. Now we are in it (campsite) we wish we had kept driving. We had already booked ahead and now we find it’s a tip, but hey-ho we are roughy-toughy travellers and we take the rough with the smooth. Guess what? They have internet but it is broken and is being removed tomorrow.
