Sat 30 May… Another dawn chorus heard as we are up at 5.30 again for another mammoth drive back to the Northern Territory. We are off to Katherine again 510K away except as we leave Western Australia the time difference is plus 1 and a half hours. As we crossed the border at 8 am it immediately became 9 30. An uneventful journey with views changing from rugged, red sandstone hills, to prairie and scrub, until we reach Katherine. It’s noticeable as soon as we arrive how much more hot and humid it is compared to the temperate climate around Broome, we are back in your tropicals again!
When we were at this site last (approx 6 weeks ago) it was jumping with cane toads, but last night sitting on the wall of the gents toilet was a 3 foot python. Still a few toads around but no frogs, maybe the snake has eaten them all. We are booked in for 3 nights, to recover from travelling, get the washing done, and restock before heading off east.
Sun 31 May… After the last 2 early morning starts and long drives, we have awarded ourselves a lie-in until 8 am! Because of the difference of one and a half hours, from W A dawn and sunset are that much later. Much better all round. Just mooched around the van all morning doing jobs washing, cleaning, firing up the computer to check emails (none) checking the oil. Then a trip into town to the supermarket, before finding ourselves in a pub for a couple of hours---how strange. It was Katherine Country Club , home of “golf, bowls and good times” and sounded a bit posh but in fact was a cross between the Norgren social club and The Crown at Tiddington, but it did have a nine hole golf course. Anyway it passed a pleasant Sunday Avo before returning to camp for more drink and solids.
