Long drag to Kununurra

Fri 29 May… As much as we like Fitzroy Crossing, we are up at the crack of dawn to get an early start, as we want to get to Kununurra in one go. 650K. On the way down we stayed one night in Halls Creek to break up the journey, ---not to be repeated. Our first stop is actually Halls Creek but only a pit stop for Diesel, as it’s comparatively cheap here. We drive slowly through the town just to have another look and sure enough it is as squalid as the last time we were here. There are groups of aborigines’ sitting around in the dust, or wandering about aimlessly. Apparently the Police have closed the bottle shop for takeaways but allowed the pub to stay open to serve midstrength beer only. It has helped but no doubt they will find a supplier of grog ( spirits and fortified wine)
Up to Halls Creek the scenery was pretty ordinary, desert and scrub, but then we moved into East Kimberly and it’s spectacular ranges. The colours were not to impressive today as it’s been cloudy and it needs sunshine to bring out the best of the colours. We did see it at it’s best on the way down so we haven’t missed anything. What we have missed is the ability to go off road to explore the Kimberly. The right vehicles are essential and it means giving up creature comforts for practicality. Anyway we are leaving this wonderful part of the country having seen a lot and missed a lot!
