Wed 3 June… Hung around Mataranka for a short while to watch them feed some enormous barramundi. The guy was feeding them by hand in the lake there but they were a bit reluctant to play. He explained this that they don’t like change in the water temperature, and it had dropped from about 28 to about 24.
Another shortish drive, further south, back to Daly Waters , the place we couldn’t believe when we stayed here in early April. It’s another beautiful morning but as we move further south we are aware of the temp falling at night. The Navigator is planning to re-instate the doona, (duvet) but P thinks not. We call at Larimah on the way down, home of the Pink Panther for a coffee at Fran’s’ Famous Devonshire Teahouse! It was a hoot! Fran make her own Pies and genuine Cornish pasties, she is famous for her buffalo and camel pies, we stuck to the ordinary ones. Goodness knows what’s in them but they tasted O K. Fran’s menu boards take some deciphering and we conclude her pies are better than her spelling though both are interesting. On to Daly Waters where there is a queue to get on the site. The place is still a tip but the pub is as popular as ever. By 3 o’clock the site is full of geriatric gypsies and even using a warm, greased spoon, you couldn’t have got anymore vans in! We are so close to the van next door that only one of us can put up our awning, We let them put theirs up as we plan an early getaway tomorrow and they are staying 2 nights. It’s like caravan coronation street, all back to back. Still it’s a great night in the pub. We have been listening to Frank, a very funny, old Aussie bloke singing and reciting poems. He really was very funny and all this with 2 live chucks on his head! When we got back to the van we could smell cigarette smoke on our clothes. Northern Territory hasn’t accepted the ban on smoking in pubs, or they just choose to ignore it. Photos of Frank to follow! Eventually!
