Borroloola and the Gulf of Carpentaria
Thurs 4 May… After the crowded campsite and pub at Daly Waters yesterday, we leave early for the peace and quiet of the outback, we are going bush for a couple of days. We are heading north east on the Carpentaria Highway, towards the Gulf of Carpentaria. The highway is all sealed but the most of it is single track all 390Ks. In the first hour we saw more kangaroos than cars, and that was 2 roos! It did get busier later though we saw no more than 20 vehicles in 5 hours of driving. We stopped at a roadhouse at Cape Crawford, famously known as Heartbreak Hotel, with the loos named Elvis and Priscilla! It looks a likely place to stay on our return journey. After a coffee we travelled another 110K to Borroloola which is still 40K short of the ocean. We might go and look at it tomorrow but we do know we won’t be able to throw ourselves in it, as the whole area is infested with salt water crocodiles. This is the end of the sealed road but the highway continues all the way to Cairns in Queensland. It’s a serious 4WD road, so we will have to back as far as Cape Crawford before tuning south again. At the moment, there is no internet here and no signal on our phones. This really is the back of beyond!
