Castle Hill

Wed 17 June… Townsville is overlooked by a very high hill, just short of being classified as a mountain, 3 K’s up a steep winding road that reaches nearly to the top. That’s the priority for today, to go and have a look at Castle Hill. We do some emails and stuff before going out, it’s the best time of day to use the shiny thing, as the internet speeds up to tortoise pace before slowing down in the evening, when everybody else is using it. Up the hill, the views are fantastic and we watch aircraft taking off way below us. Photos to follow! We thought Townsville was big but up the hill we realise just how big it is spread over a large area.
Back down the hill we drive out of town along the coast heading north to Rowes Bay at Pallarenda. It’s mainly a sandy coastline as far as you can see and we find a spot of beach with no-one in sight. The only company we have are sea eagles and red tailed black cockatoos, plus a small snake scooting across the sand. It was the thickness of a pencil and about 10 inches long, browny-green coloured. We really must get an I-spy book of snakes! Back at base the R A A F are still trying to deafen everybody, hopefully they will finish earlier tonight but then I suppose the Railway Shunters club will set up! It really noisy after the outback!
