Fri 12 June… Woke up to another bright sunny morning, but bloody cold! All that was missing was the frost. Off we go across the Outback again, though it was marginally more interesting today as we saw some hills in the distance and a few more trees, but we still had another 250k’s of railway line. We are in Charters Towers which is a biggish town with some history, so we thought we would stay for 2 nights and find out a bit more about the town tomorrow. We did call in at the tourist information office and it does seem to be worth a days look around. It’s an old mining town, (gold) but the buildings look more like the ones in old western films than of Oz.
Back at our camp they have a happy hour with a BYO and listen to an Aussie Bushman telling stories and reciting poems, very politically incorrect but quite funny. All done for free until the hat gets passed round, but a good hour of fun.
