Fri 24 April…… That was Katherine again for the second time and we will have to come back through here again at some time after we have done Broome and the Kimberley, though we may be disappointed with the amount of Kimberley that we will see. Everything we have read about the area so far is for 4WD or helicopters, it is a remote an area as anywhere else we have been in Australia. We are staying one night at a small town called Timber Creek about a 300K drive. The drive down was fairly unspectacular, some nice mountain ranges but just around this area it is cattle country, Savannah, and pretty flat. We intend to stop for coffee at Victoria River which is a Roadhouse come Motel. Somehow we weren’t paying attention and drove straight past it! Never mind there is a picnic area and lookout not too far ahead called Kuwang lookout which when we get there is closed for renovation. Next stop Timber Creek and a late lunch.
Here, at Timber Creek we are parked about 50m from the creek, which has a narrow foot bridge across. On the other side is a boab tree full off fruit bats so Peter wandered over to take some photos. On the bridge he heard a bit of a splash and assumed it was a duck or waterfowl. It’s a smelly old creek and full of vegetation and probably mossies. He calls the Navigator to come and see the bats when halfway across the bridge we are confronted by two 2.5m crocs in the water below us looking like they are heading for the bank behind us. We exit stage left rapidly! The navigator later said the woman at reception had told her there were crocs in the creek and of course Peter didn’t hear that. It was something of a shock, though Peter has ventured back quietly to get some photos but the crocs won’t come close enough or should that be the other way round!
This is a bit of a grotty campsite but it does have a pool with a big steel fence around it!
