Sat 14 Mar The one touristy thing we missed yesterday in Redcliff was a monster of a machine called Big Lizze. As it’s only 8K out of town we feel we should go and have a look. We take some photographs in case Mr Barry Baker wants to buy it! It’s an amazing thing, even the Navigator thought so even though it is a boy thing. It weighs in at 45 ton, it’s as big as a house and has a top speed of 2 mph. It’s a tractor type vehicle that was used for clearing the bush ready for agricultural use and also pulled another huge trailer and transported people, wool and equipment and could cross the rivers at certain places. Photos to follow. For further technical information google it!
We are of to Renmark over the border to “sarf orstrayia!” about 140K,Navigator in control whilst Peter had a little doze as he got too happy at happy hour last night. We are still travelling through wineries but they get fewer and we are then back to straight roads through tedious bush. At the border we are stopped and searched for fruit and plants. Theyare paranoid about the fruit fly being transported over the border in South Australia. Have they not realised they can fly?! Anyway the only fruit we have is crushed grapes and they are in bottles. Fines are quite swingeing if you are caught smuggling fruit and veg, on the spot fines of $1000 and more.
At Renmark we intend to stay at the same camp that we stayed at the last time, but we couldn’t find it! However have found another camp which is fine, it is on the river and although all the riverside spots are taken we have a nice grassy site just 25m from the river There are lots of boaties here dragging their kids up and down the river on rubber rings or planks whilst the house boats just drift quietly by. There is a lot of kangaroo poo around the place, perhaps we will have visitors later tonoght.
