The town of Port Macquarie was much bigger than we expected, unlike the van park, and glory be, it had a Dan Murphys where we invested $120 on essential supplies, cheap at half the price! The town is really nice but we didn’t want to spend another night on our postage stamp sized parking space in the not so nice caravan park. So, we made our way a bit further north to Urunga , not far from Nambucca Heads.
On the way up we did a couple of detours out to the coast, never very far from the Pacific highway. First to Stuarts Point, a very pretty village full of holiday homes, with nobody in them. We moved on to Scotts Head which was much the same although it did have a caravan park there, that also looked quiet.
Here at Urunga we have a very nice spot overlooking the river and the lagoon, beyond that is the ocean. There is a board walk that goes out alongside the river and lagoon, the lagoon being a mangrove swamp. It’s a fair way, maybe 3k there and back with lots to see. The birdlife is really good, much of it we didn’t recognise, which had us reaching for the bird book. There are lots of pelicans which swoop down in skeins of twenty or more to land on the river where they feed. It’s quite a sight. We like Urunga and so will stay a couple of nights.

Back to wearing shorts at long last as the temperature creeps up, 21C today. Our caravan park is ideally situated, just across the road from the pub and shops on one side, the river and ocean on the other. After a leisurely start and a bit of sunbathing we walked to the end of the boardwalk and onto the beach for a paddle. It seems like an age since we dipped our toes in the briny. Urunga looks like a good place to chill out for a few days before we start to make our way up to Brizzy towards the end of the month.

A day of doing not much, just resurrecting the tan as there are parts that haven’t seen the light of day for some time. We have a couple of new books that we bought in Port Maquarie so it is really good to be able to sit out in the sunshine and read.
We have done our bit of exercise by walking along the river this morning, then halfway along the boardwalk this arvo. Jane did a bit of inside van cleaning and is feeling smug claiming I never lift a finger, which is not true. I check the oil occasionally!

This caravan park is one of the better ones with large grassy sites.. Look out of the front of the van and I can see the sea and lookout of the rear window and I can see the pub, what more can you want! There is lots of wildlife round herewith a couple of quite tame rabbits that chase each other around the vans. There are lots of Ibis that are always around, but the pelicans on the foreshore seem to come and go. We have seen a couple of different sorts of honeyeaters in the mangroves as we walk along the boardwalk and various wading birds feeding on the small fish that come in on the tide. This really is a lovely place.
