End of a worrying fortnight

 12/06/2012
Sitting here in Townsville killing time is making us realise how much we are missing Cairns. During the wet when there wasn’t much going on at least we could meet up with friends for a coffee or a beer. Here we are just mooching about. Had a phone call from  Jules last night which didn’t help matters.
When we were here in September last year the council was in the process of putting the beach back, it had disappeared with cyclone Yasi. Now it looks really good, in fact the whole of Townsville looks to have had a facelift. It’s a really nice town and is typical of how wealthy Australia is, lots of money being spent here.

More of the same as we tested Townsville’s new beach, even managing a quick dip in the briny. I’m afraid the sea at 20C is a bit too chilly without a wetsuit, I must be going soft. Jane had a call from Lorraine last night checking upon us and showing concern. No phone call from the clinic so it’s looking like a Friday appointment.

The tan is coming along very nicely though we need to be careful as the U V  is always high here. Not seen a cloud for nearly 10 days!
Had a call from the clinic confirming tomorrows appointment.

What a boring day, spent mostly in Doctors waiting rooms and hospital X-ray departments. Our mid-day appointment with the specialist was running late and when we did get in, he couldn’t give us any news. The disc that the dentist  in Charters Towers did was a load of crap ( the specialist said politely) Our man couldn’t make anything of it and so sent us to the hospital for a CT scan. He did send us off with a good deal of encouragement saying that dentists go into fits when they see anything unusual on X-rays. Of course that doesn’t mean a thing, but we are feeling much more positive.
We have to collect he scan and take it back to the specialist on Monday morning, weekends always seem to bugger things up. So. After 3 hours in X-ray we finally got away before it got dark and we will probably get drunk. Jules phoned later and that was her recommendation!!

Bit of a slow start which was ok as we sat chatting to John and Vanessa on the skype thing for an hour.
We picked up the scan X-ray from the hospital this morning hoping for a sneaky look at it but it was sealed with a label saying it was to be opened only by a doctor. Probably just as well really.
On the Strand ( promenade) here in Townsville there are several large grassy recreational  areas with free electric BBQ’s, everything you need for the outdoor life. On one of these very well kept lawns we watched the beginning of a wedding ceremony taking place with the beautiful Magnetic Island as a backdrop. A wonderful setting with perfect weather almost guaranteed. We would have stayed to watch for longer but it was running towards ‘beer o clock’!

Another skype session to start the day, this time with Ruth in the USA. Trying to keep up to speed with the different time zones is a real pain.
We did nothing for the rest of the day but worry about the outcome of our visit to the doctors tomorrow.
Had a pretty nasty chicken parmigiana for tea just to compound things.

What a relief. Jane has got the all clear from the specialist, his interpretation of the scan is there is a slight abnormality but it is nothing to worry about. Apparently she has very large sinuses, so there!! Always knew there was something abnormal about her. So that means we can now get on with our lives and travel. As soon as we got the good news we filled up with diesel, did some shopping, bought a select bottle of bubbly ($ 6)and hit the road.
We are free camped just south of Ayr (still in Queensland), the strangest free camp we have experienced. There must be 30 to 40vans/ motor homes all alongside a disused railway line. The majority appear to be travellers as opposed to holiday makers. We can sense the different atmosphere, it’s a lot more friendly than a lot of the van parks.
We are about to crack open the bespoke bottle of shampoo, I just wish we had enough for everyone here, we are so happy. All our pals up in Cairns have rung or text , they will be having a drink no doubt to celebrate.
