Point Samson

  12/07/2011
Another miserable day weather wise, still windy and overcast and from what we can gather it’s pretty gloomy throughout the whole of W A .
Paid a return visit to the deserted town of Cossack with it’s museum and derelict buildings. Not all are derelict some have  been well preserved. These are the solid stone ones that have survived cyclones, funny how one of the most substantial ones is the town goal.
Mooched around for the rest of the day before returning for afternoon tea and scones.

A huge improvement in the weather, giving us a chance to explore this tiny seaside town of Point Samson. We are camped very close to the shore and we can hear the waves crashing on the rocks when there isn’t too much noise  from the dozens of kids running around the camp. ( School holidays) Just a few minutes walk from our site is a lovely sandy bay called Honeymoon Cove, good for fishing, swimming and snorkelling. The sea will have to warm up again after the storm before we venture in.  A little further on is the working harbour of Point Samson, not too many pleasure craft apart from a few fishing dinghies. We did see a white breasted Sea Eagle and hopefully got a couple of good photos.
There is only one store here in Point Samson and as we couldn’t be bothered to pack everything away to go shopping for tea to a bigger town, we decided to buy something from their freezer, no fresh produce available. If there are no more blogs you will know we have been poisoned as our barbeque platter for one (each) looks pretty grim. Also we are nearly out of beer so we are off to the pub.

We had wanted to stick around here at Point Samson for the weekend as we are now beginning to kill time before moving up to Broome at the beginning of August but the place is fully booked.  We have managed to get a spot for Sunday and Monday so we will go off into the bush for a couple of nights and free camp. This really is a popular resort although there isn’t a lot here, it’s purely the location. The pub was quite busy last night but having a captive clientele, they know how to charge -------back to Perth prices $10 per pint. ( £6.75) Maybe it was busy because of the Wednesday special of half price T-bone steaks, we didn’t eat there but spent nearly half our daily budget on beer and we were only there a couple of hours.
The barbeque pack from the shop was actually very tasty, we were really surprised, it consisted of a lamb chop, a lump of rump steak hammered out and 2 snags to each pack. Kept us from starvation!!
We drove into the nearest town this morning for essentials, but will do a major shop tomorrow in Karratha before going bush.
