Murchison Gorge

09/06/2011
Said goodbye to our neighbours Lesley and Ian who are moving on today. Expect there will be lots more cheerios on this LIFE OF RILEYS TOUR.
Today we visited the Kalbarri Nation al Park which meant we had to stow everything and drive out for the day. In particular we went to visit the Murchison Gorge, the river meanders for 80K’s through the park. To get there is 30K’s of unsealed road, rather like driving across corrugated iron covered in snow! Our first stop at a lace called Z Bend was truly spectacular, ( photo’s eventually) the views just stunning, looking down into the gorge from 100’s of feet up and along the river. From the lookout point there is a track/scramble down to the river which was very demanding. We managed to get gat halfway, about 1 K, before turning back, the Old Gals legs not quite long enough for the steep scramble down the rocks! About 10K’s away there is another observation point called Natures Window with, once again magnificent views and track to follow for 8K’s if you have the mind --- we didn’t! By this time the battery on the camera was giving up but we reckoned we have enough snaps to bore you all rigid!
31K’s back to the main road, slipping and sliding about , the back end trying to overtake the front, then a short detour to a lookout point at Meanarra Hill. From here we had great views over Kalbarri town and the Indian Ocean coastline. Drove back through the town and out the other end for a quick look at Red Bluff Beach, then Mushroom Rock before the call of a cold tin of V B got the better of us!
