Friday 9 October… It rained in the night but not enough to keep the dust down, they forecast between 5 and 10mm, it was more like 10 spots.
We have spent the day just mooching about and had to abandon our swim in the sea as a shoal of stingers ( jellyfish) have been washed up. We are not clued up on stingers, some are more dangerous than others and there are a couple of species that can be fatal so we don’t take the chance. Peter had a walk along the beach later and it seemed they were confined to one area so he reckoned it was probably safe further along. We put some in a bucket and photo’ed them so we can look them up whenever we come across the eye spy book of stingers.
Saturday 10 October… The rain we should have had the other night came last night, quite a downpour for a short while but very welcome if you are a Queenslander.
Now that things have quietened down here we are seeing much more of the local wildlife. The peacocks and hens have always been around, screeching as they can and the beach stone curlews visit and join in the noise at night. We have some furry visitors in the late evening, they are called musky rat kangaroos and are aptly named. They are about the size of a cat but rat like with long back legs which makes it skip like a kangaroo. They come in to try and knock the dustbins over looking for food. We have the photos. There is an Ibis that visits looking for food. He has a broken top bill and has trouble picking stuff up. We have the usual parrots and minor birds and scrub fowl. There was a beautiful green tree snake in a bush this morning but he had gone by the time we got back with the camera. It really is an interesting park.

Those stingers look the same as bluebottles whick sting but rarely kill. However wouldn't take any chances swimming in the area as even if they don't kill you the pain is so intense it is disabling...so my sister in law tells me,having been stung by a stinger on the ankle 100 kms or so south west of Darwin a number of years ago.She was then taken by boat to get help and when she got off the boat a salty was waiting for her.He missed...and that is why I speak of her in the present tense.Keep me posted about your plans...I could perhaps 'sub'(to use Neil Daniels words)you a bit if you get strapped...but will want a pint or two later...least I could do for fellow former 'Useless Society'members...mean it.Don't let pride get in the way...you have come a long way and may not get back down here for a while...let me know and send details. In the meantime take care.Oh let me know how much 10 pints of Hart lager costs...I owe Rob Bell...lost Ashes bet !!Hear from you.Hamish,Dram and Rube(did you get the photo on your mobile of my kids ?)
