Still travelling North
Wed 9 September… We have clocked up 330K’s today taking us further north and well on our way to Townsville. The Queensland Outback is just like any bush country that we have travelled through, vast prairie and savannah with the odd mountain range on the skyline to keep us interested. Emerald was the last big town that we came through and that was 250K’s back down the road. The next big town is another 200K’s north, so we really are in the middle of nowhere. The place is called Belyando Crossing, so small we drove past as the navigator was snoozing. It is just a roadhouse with a couple of petrol pumps and some space behind where we are parked and hooked up to the electric. There is a tiny toilet and shower block which could prove interesting in the morning as there are 6 vans here, just seeing out the night before moving on tomorrow. As we have said before, there was not a great deal to look at on our way through the bush but the road is used by a few road trains and so the highway is littered with Kangaroo corpses, flattened by the huge, 55m long road trains. We did see several emus (alive) as we travelled, more than we have ever seen in one day. It has been very hot again today and now looks set to stay like this for months to come, though when the tropical wet season starts it will become more and more humid.
