Dusty Old Day

Thurs 24 September… Great excitement in the womens amenities first thing this morning. A Hercules moth was found lurking in one of the cubicles looking for a mate. These moths are as big as the width of a hand, about 8 inches across and apparently once hatched if they don’t find a girlie Hercules within 2 days they die. We have a rough idea what does happen if they do find a lady moth, but do they still die anyway, if so, what of ? Photos to follow!
We had thick fog when we got up and could barely see the tops of the hills behind us, yet it wasn’t damp, but still very warm and breezy. It turned out not to be fog but the edge of the severe dust storm that covered most of N S W from Sydney up as far as southern Queensland and Brisbane, yesterday. We are much further north but it still turned the air murky with poor visibility. We are so pleased we did our mountain top tour yesterday, it would have been a disastrous waste of time doing it today. It seems there is much washing and polishing of 4X4’s to be done in Sydney as all their shiny off roaders are now covered in red desert sand and they never even left the suburbs!
We had an afternoon in the seaside town of Palm Cove, a very posh place north of Cairns and claims to be the “Spa Capital of Australia” it certainly has plenty of bespoke spa hotels, what ever they are. Palm Cove has a picture postcard palm fringed beach except today it did not look it’s best because of the dust haze, ------that and the wind which was whipping up the sea, making it really rough. We were having a good time in the surf until the budgies got filled up with that sand and started that chaffing-------most uncomfortable. Back at base we still have the dusty haze, a couple or more V B’s should keep the dust down.
