Byron Bay

Wed 29 July… We had visitors in the night who trashed our outside picnic area. We left out George the Gorilla on the table alongside a bag of rubbish, the remnants of last nights evening meal. The brush turkeys decided to recycle it all so Grandad spent some time wandering around looking for corn husks and anything else that hadn’t been eaten. There had been a good deal of fat in a plastic bag which disappeared, we think we may have some very relaxed brush turkeys around the camp.
Spent the day at Byron Bay just a few minutes drive from our campsite and managed to park on the seafront overlooking the main beach. The weather is as good as it can be for mid winter, 21c but the sea is cold, not that that stops the boys, they have been in it all day, even Grandad had a dip. We had a walk round town and bought the must have Byron Bay T-shirts. We are surprised how busy it is though it is a favourite holiday destination, even the beaches were busy. Byron Bay has long been a mecca for hippies, they came in the 60’s and now they are all in their 60’s they are still here, it’s the oddest sight. Never seen so much cheese cloth, kaftans, beads and bangles, dreadlocks (on a 60 year old!). Ageing juveniles strumming guitars and blowing on gob organs, all bare footed of course!. There are the obligatory VW campers with the old ban the bomb sign and make love not war in rainbow colours painted on!. The whole place is in a time warp, everywhere we went we got the faint smell of ganja, brought back memories it did! (even Tobi commented about the nice smell!!). Apart from the aged hippie community there are a few ancient rockers on their Harley’s, then there are the backpackers, surfers and wino’s. A very eclectic society, in fact we are positive we have never seen so many practising weirdo’s in one yup!.
