Wed 24 June… We liked the village and campsite of Lucinda but there is a bit more of Northern Queensland to see before we head south, so we pack up and clear off. This part of Queensland appears to be very affluent, the houses are all very well presented with lovely manicured lawns and gardens all around, there is obviously a lot of money in sugar cane.
We are going to visit Girringun National Park and in particular Wallaman Falls, the highest single drop waterfall in Australia. The journey out is 50K’s with the last 15 up a very steep and winding road, it’s funny how waterfalls are always at the top of a hill. The old van is getting used to these hills now. We are into dense, tropical rainforest until we reach the waterfall and it is truly spectacular. The fall is 268m and you can scramble down to the bottom and back again in 3 hours if you have a mind to, but we didn’t! We couldn’t believe that a bunch of Japanese tourists had found there way up there, but sure enough, there they were taking photos of each other instead of the views. They really are an odd breed. In the rainforest here, it is noted for it’s cassowaries which are quite rare ( we did see one when we were here in 2003) We would love to have seen another but the only birds we saw, which are not so common, were 2 brush turkeys. Not a cassowary in sight. There were other colourful tropical birds about but they were too quick for us to identify.
Back down in cane country we drive though a place called Trebonne then into Ingam, which has a definite Italian influence. They say the Italian restaurants here are very good and they have an Italian festival here every year.
We have stopped a bit further up the coast at Cardwell but have yet to investigate it.
