Back to the bush Kakadu

Sat 18 April…… So it’s goodbye to Darwin as we are on our way back out into the bush to visit Kakadu National Park, a place to find true Aboriginal culture, not just dot painting for tourists. Trouble is it is mostly 4WD country, so we may have to do trips if we are to see as much as we can. Darwin was good, we liked being there, though we missed out on their famous sunsets being so far from the coast. We also missed the famous evening Mindil market, though apparently it’s so popular it’s a bit of a scrum now. We did get to bother some crocs and you can’t do it all!
We have no intentions of driving too far and our first stop is at a Wetlands Information centre set up high on a hill with lovely views over the wetlands where they are now farming water buffalo and rice. On through the oddly named town of Humpty Doo ( I don’t know why it’s called that) and over the croc infested Adelaide River, by bridge and causeway,…….as if!!! We are staying at a site which is a Motel, called Aurora Kakadu, it has a camp ground tagged on the side. Not many people here but it has the regulation swimming pool. As we park up Peter gets into a bit of a banter with a couple of Ozzie fishermen, who clocked our Roaming Rileys sign on the back of the van. Cricket seemed to be the main topic , which put him on the back foot, playing defensively! All done in fun and they gave us a great chunk of Barramundi for our dinner. Kakadu being a park is teeming with wild life and already we need to look up a couple of birds in the book and there are a few wallabies jumping around the campsite, and we are camped next to the South Alligator River! No alligators in Australia,…..the crocs must have eaten them all!
The barramundi was delicious, couldn’t have been fresher, and then after tea, just to remind us that it is still the rainy season, we had a heavy shower.
