Bye Bye Burra

Fri 20 Mar we enjoyed this small site as it was a friendly place, but it's bye bye Burra and after a quick stop for diesel ( down 3 cents a litre to $1.17 which is about about 55p per litre) we head off for Port Augusta. The last major town before the wilderness of the red centre. It's 225K of mostly scrub with some interesting bits along the way. One village, Hallett, that we went through boasted the birthplace of Sir Hubert Wilkins or Watkins or somebody, we'd never heard of him.....population 70. Another village didn't even have a name, but had a pub and a war memorial which was beautifully tended, that was it ,no houses! A lot later on,we passed an immaculately kept cemetry with not a house 20K either side. All very strange. The first town we come to of any size is Peterborough, an old railway town but sadly no trains now. It was really quite shabby. We had a walk up and down the main street, we may have done some shopping there but didn't have much cash and there wasn't an ATM that we could see. It really was a poor town, lots of shops closed and lots of charity shops. Next stop was Orroroo, for coffee which was much more prosperous, farming country See! For lots of ks we have seen clouds of dust in the distance where they be a scrattering at the stubble ready to sow again. Not a job to be doing in these temperatures without aircon. It's been getting warmer every day recently, 32 today, 34 tomorrow. The next place of any note we go through is (W)ilmington. It was shut not dissimilar to the Warwickshire equivalent. One final very nice part of our journey is when we pass through a mountain range with Mount Remarkable as it's centre. We go through a lovely pass called Horrocks Gorge, which leads out onto the plain in front of Spencer Gulf which is connected to the Southern Ocean. From here we can see the Flinders Range but been there, done that in the rain. Parked up for a couple of nights in Port Augusta so we can get stocked up for the journey South to North. Spell check didn't like ascrattering!
