Wellington

Not a bad morning weatherwise as we left Blackhead after our $42 showers! Back to Route 2 and south to Wellington. An uneventful journey passing thro Woodville " the windfarm capital of N Z" then greytown "the daffodil capital of N Z" uneventful that is until we reach the Rimutaka Range which is another high mountain pass with incredible views. We drop down into Upper Hutt which although about 20K from Wellington is the urban outskirts of the city. An excellent piece of navigation finds us at our campsite at Lower Hutt-- most fortunate. This a Top Ten site and we know the amenities will work and be clean, except for the blessed WI FI which disappoints us again and doesn't get us very far except very frustrated!
Next day, forecast dry and warm--------correct-----. We plan a tourist "see the city day" and so catch a bus into Wellington, No83.Takes 40 min and drops us off at the waterfront which is a typical bustling ferry terminal and quay, lots of interesting sculptures and ethnic stuff. Wandered around until coffee time then after caught the cable car which took us up a depth to the botanical gardens. Wonderful views over Wellington and the harbour, looked at some plants and things and then back down to sea level.
Wellington, like most capital cities is very cosmopolitan and seems to to be divided into sections. We tend to gravitate to the ones with the most bars in! Cuba street was interesting,"full of bloody weirdos" the navigator said. "Eclectic" he said(weird eclectics.) Had a beer sitting out side Murphys Bar and watched the Ecletics go by. Had lunch in a food hall with a multitude of choices he had a kebab, I had a beef burrito. Lambton District was posh, the business quarter, full of suits, short skirts and cappucinos. Waterfront was full of tourists, bad beer from its own micro brewerey and local youths diving off the quayside into the harbour. Peter liked Courteney the best it was were the bus terminal was another wonderful Irish bar Kitty O'Sheas the like he has not sen since Dublin circa 19 something! We sat on the balcony and watched several of our buses depart! We caught one eventually and arrived back at camp in time to cook some solids.
